Is Your Business at Optimum Performance?

Posted November 23rd, 2015

Business leaders often have a lot on their plate. Just keeping up with the day-to-day operations can take up all of their time. They are so busy putting out fires and planning for the future, that they might not take the time to see if their business is at its optimum performance levels.

Here are some things that business leaders need to keep tabs on to make sure their enterprise is running efficiently and effectively.

1. Policies and procedures.
Many policies and procedures have been in place for a long time. They may be outdated or no longer needed. Often, no one really knows why a particular policy is in place. It’s simply the way things have always been done.

They need to be reviewed periodically, updated, and documented. Policies need to be written down so that everyone is aware of them and how they should be carried out. Documentation ensures that procedures are uniform throughout the entire organization.

All employees need to be aware of what the policies are, and the company needs to also document employee’s agreement to abide by the policies.

2. Good onboarding
A lot of problems that crop up can be avoided by a thorough onboarding process. Managers need to take the time during onboarding to ensure that new employees understand all of the policies and procedures and how important it is that they abide by these rules and regulations.

3. Keeping up with workplace law
Human resource law is constantly changing and evolving, so companies need to keep up with it and make sure their policies and procedures reflect the changes in the law. One prominent example of this is the legal requirements regarding gay and lesbian rights. Companies also need to have a regular review process in place to make sure they keep up with changes.

4. Recording worker performance problems.
Often, companies document inadequacies in the way an employee has been doing his or her job after he or she has been let go. By then, it is too late. Managers need to document problems as they occur, not after the fact. Reports need to be timely, and they need to be dated.

Federal and state regulators, as well as courts, only recognize problems that have been well documented.
