How to Follow Up Without Being a Pest

Posted September 14th, 2015

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers told us that “The waiting is the hardest part,” and this couldn’t be more true for job seekers. When a job opportunity comes your way and you’ve made it a few steps into the application process, being patient while hiring decisions are being made can be excruciating. The natural reaction is to follow up with the company. But there is a right way to do this and a wrong way. Get the information you’re seeking without jeopardizing your chances by using these tips.

Limit Your Follow-Up

Following up with one call or email is appropriate, even expected. But anything more than that can quickly become annoying. No matter how tempted you are to send out message after message, resist the urge and wait for the hiring manager to reach out to you.

Time Your Follow-Up

Follow up too quickly and you come across as annoying. Follow up too late and you might miss your window of opportunity. The best time to get in touch is two to three days after your last point of contact. Try to connect early in the morning before email inboxes and voice-mail folders start to fill up.

Stay Professional

When it comes to a follow-up, bigger is not better. You might get noticed for sending flowers or a gift, but these kinds of over-the-top gestures won’t help you get the job. Conversely, avoid being too casual. It’s never a smart idea to follow up though social media or by stopping into the office unannounced.

Know Your Goals

Following up with a potential employer has two purposes. First, you want to get your name/credentials back on the hiring manager’s mind so you will stand out as they begin to review candidates. Second, you want to get information about the status of your application. You can accomplish both of these goals succinctly, and you shouldn’t strive to do anything extra. A follow-up should be a basic inquiry, not a second audition.

With any luck, your follow-up will highlight your initiative, set you apart from other candidates, and satisfy some of your burning curiosity all at the same time. As you continue to work through the application process, rely on resources from Bayside Solutions to help you achieve your goals.
