Applying for Jobs with Bad Credit
Posted July 20th, 2015
When you apply for a job today, there is a lot more information available about you than in the past. Employers today can check the internet and social media sites for background, things they couldn’t do before.
Some employers today even check your credit history, assuming that if you cannot manage your finances, you might not be able to manage a job. This has stirred up some controversy. Some argue that your credit history has nothing to do with your job skills, and should not be considered at all. The fact of the matter, however, is that it is done, and you should be prepared for it.
First of all, you need to know that you do not have to give an employer permission to look at your credit history. But, if you do that, you run the risk of being eliminated from consideration for a job.
If your credit history isn’t the best, what can you do about it? The first thing is to find out exactly how bad it is. The three big credit reporting agencies will give you a free copy of your credit report once every year. Get one and make sure it is accurate. If there are any mistakes on it, talk to the credit agencies about them and get them corrected.
Then you need to repair your bad credit problem. First, you need to come up with a budget so that you know how much you owe each month. The first thing is to find out what your debt payments are each month. Calculate the minimum that you pay each month, and then add about 10 percent to the amount so that you can begin to pay down the debt.
Then add up all of your monthly bills – mortgage or rent, utility bills, food, and the like. Your bills and debt payments are what you owe each month, and so you will have to budget accordingly.
You can also try to lower your monthly credit payment as well as negotiate a lower interest rate. You do this simply by calling up your creditors and asking them if they would be willing to make adjustments. Most of them want to keep your business and so are willing to negotiate changes to your agreement.
If you are reluctant to do this yourself, there are credit repair agencies who, for a fee, will act on your behalf to negotiate with creditors.
Once you have made arrangements to pay off your debt, your final task is to restore your credit score, which can be done in a number of different ways.
