How to Deal with an IT Talent Crunch
Posted June 22nd, 2015
If your company is looking for IT talent, you probably already know that it is becoming a good deal harder to find the people you need. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting that jobs for information technology systems administrators are expected to grow by almost one-third by 2020. That’s twice as fast as for most jobs.
So, it’s not going to be as easy to recruit IT talent. The competition for good people will be stiffer. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make your recruiting efforts easier and more effective.
1. Accept that you are in a tougher market.
Finding good IT talent, especially for in-demand areas like cloud computing and big data, will require some real beating of the bushes. You need to plan accordingly by making adjustments to your recruiting budget and for what you are willing to pay, as people skilled in these areas can command top dollar. You also need to establish relationships with recruiting professionals in the IT area. These are people who know what the market is like and where to look to find the talent you need.
2. Build connections
You will have a better chance of finding the talent you need if you build connections in the IT community to find out what’s out there. For example, following IT groups on LinkedIn and other social media and keeping tabs on IT professional organizations will enable you to establish relationships with people in the field and may yield benefits down the road.
3. Sell the job
It’s not enough to just post a job description and expect people to be satisfied with that. IT people, like everyone else, want positions that they will find rewarding and challenging, that will give them an opportunity to learn and develop in their career, and will offer them the opportunity to advance. You need to address all of these concerns when conducting your job search.
4. Think strategically
When you hire, you cannot think about the job in isolation from your organization as a whole. You have to frame your hiring in terms of the overall goals, mission and vision of the company. You should have a clear and compelling brand that candidates can see.
This way, they will have a better idea if their goals and values mesh with those of the company. Moreover, if you use a recruiter, and he or she understands your brand – your culture, vision and values as a company – he will better be able to screen candidates and provide you with those who will be a good fit for the company.
