Tech Companies Turn to Staffing Firms for Recruiting

Posted April 13th, 2015

It’s no secret that IT companies are having trouble finding tech talent. The same is true for many healthcare professions, most notably nursing.

So, to find the people they need, IT firms and healthcare organizations are increasingly turning to staffing agencies for help. Companies most often turn to staffing agencies when they are looking for application software developers, web developers and nurses, according to surveys.

It’s easy to see why – according to an analysis of online job postings, the demand for web developers rose over 40 percent in one year, and the demand for software developers jumped an astounding 70 percent over the same time period, while the demand for nurses went up by 25 percent.

Even before the increase in demand, these jobs were among the hardest to fill. Finding enough nurses has been a problem for years. Of the top ten job types that companies need assistance in filling, seven are computer related. The other three job categories where companies turn to staffing agencies for help are nursing, accounting, and bookkeeping.

The difficulties the companies have result from growth – they simply need more of these people than they did in the past – and the growth in the industry – there are more IT companies today than in the past and they are all looking for talent.

So, companies are turning to staffing agencies to help with filling jobs that HR departments cannot find people for, either because of a severe shortage of talent, or because of a lack of company resources and time to recruit, especially when looking for people with very specialized skill sets.

Some industry experts advise that companies not even waste time trying to fill these jobs themselves, but go immediately to an outside firm. These firms have a number of advantages in the search for talent. Because they specialize in recruiting, they have networks that companies may not. They know the lay of the land, so to speak, where demand is highest, and where the talent pools are. If companies use these firms as a first response, they can save a lot of time and money.
