Developing Your Brand

Posted February 9th, 2015

Most employers know the importance of branding. Branding is important not only to create product awareness, but also for hiring purposes.

Employers with strong brands ultimately attract the best people. A prime example of this is Google. It’s brand is so powerful that many other IT firms cannot compete with Google for top talent.

So, how do you go about creating a strong brand?

The first thing to do is develop a branding strategy, and get the support of the company leadership in the effort. Two things to focus on in this area are your company website and the hiring process.

The company website is usually the first point of contact with job candidates. It can be a good opportunity to sell your company to potential employees. So, you want to make sure what is on the site is an accurate and honest portrayal of your company. Effective branding begins with an honest representation.
Make sure to include plenty of visual material on the web page as well. You want to show candidates what the work environment is like at your company. Pictures can be very effective at doing this. Infographics also can be effective in conveying information quickly and easily and in a user-friendly manner.

Make sure to include articles about your company and recognition that your company has received right on the career page of your company website.
Also, make sure you keep the website updated with information that is current.

The interview process is another place where job candidates get to see the company brand, and to what extent the company fits with its brand marketing.
To get the most from the interview process, hiring managers and interviewers need to plan ahead. They should know how they want to approach the interview, what techniques they want to use, and what aspects of the candidate’s experience they want to focus on.

They also need to show some empathy for the job candidate by putting themselves in the candidate’s shoes. For example, don’t leave them waiting for a long period of time or forget to offer them something to drink. Let them know where the restroom is.

These are all things that will reflect your brand.
