How to Stay Happy at Work
Posted January 5th, 2015
In the world of work, the emphasis is on efficiency and productivity. But one thing that doesn’t get a lot of attention is the atmosphere at work. In other words, how enjoyable it is for people to come to work? How cheerful people are about their work. This may sound like an irrelevancy to those focused on productivity, but it certainly plays no small role in the effort people put into their jobs.
So, how can you increase your enjoyment quotient at work? Here are a few ways.
1. Watch your attitude.
To paraphrase the words of a great writer, the world in itself is neither good nor bad, but it is our thoughts that make it so. Our own happiness depends to a great extent on our own attitude. If we have a negative attitude, eager to see the bad in things, our life will certainly not be very cheerful or satisfying. The same is true at work. A negative attitude, where a person is all too eager to see the down side, the things that can go wrong, will not make work a very pleasant place.
But our attitude is completely within our own power, so we can focus on the things that make our jobs enjoyable and fulfilling. And, if you really cannot find anything at all that you like about your job, maybe it’s time to look for other employment.
2. Improve your skills.
No matter what kind of job you have, you can always work to develop your skills and knowledge. You can do this in several ways. One way is to go back to the classroom. Another is to take on more responsibility at work, either by asking for new duties, or volunteering for assignments.
Volunteering is another way to try new activities and develop your skills.
3. Get to know your coworkers.
Striking up friendships at work is certainly one way to help make your job more enjoyable. Socializing helps improve our mood, our attitude, and our outlook on life. Have lunch with a few of your coworkers, or strike up a conversation during a coffee break. You will surely find things you have in common.
4. Help Others
When we are not happy, we are focused on ourselves and our problems. To get out of that navel-gazing attitude, you can shift your focus from yourself to other people and helping them to fulfill their needs. This always helps to improve our attitude.
