How to Conduct a Video Interview

Posted August 25th, 2014

These days, more companies are using video interviews for job candidates. It allows businesses to get the experience of a live interview without spending the money to have the candidate travel.

But there are issues with video interviews that companies need to think about, especially when and how to use them. For example, they need to consider if they want to use the video interview up front, when job candidates fill out applications, or if they want to reserve them for later in the process, after they have screened resumes and narrowed down the field.

Using them up front will enable the company to get a much better picture of job candidates, but it will also require hiring managers to sift through a lot of video. Using video interviews after the initial stage of the hiring process will enable hiring managers to focus on fewer candidates.

The best kinds of questions to ask in the interview are those that require the applicant to talk about activities during their previous jobs. Behavioral questions work well here – asking the person to talk about a problem they confronted and how they solved it. You could ask them about problems facing your company now and ask the candidate how he or she would go about handling it. Other questions include why the person wants the job or why he likes your company.

For the most part, you shouldn’t pay too much attention to how good the video is, the quality of the video itself. The important thing to focus on is what the job candidates talk about when answering questions. One thing to watch out for, however, is people who prop cue cards up behind the camera to read answers. You will notice these people as their eyes move from left to right as they read.

Video interviews also give you the opportunity to be a little more creative. For example, if you are interviewing an architect, you can ask him to show you a drawing; a computer programmer can show you an app; a trainer can show you a sample workout.
