What to do After a Candidate Rejects a Job Offer

Posted June 2nd, 2014

You have gone through an extensive job search for an open position – advertising for the job and interviewing. You have selected a person who you believe is a good fit for the position and offered him or her the job. But the person has decided not to take it. You made what efforts you could to change the person’s mind through salary and benefit negotiations, but to no avail.

So now you have a problem. What do you do? You could start the whole process over again, using up a good deal more time and resources in the hope of finding a candidate just as good. Or you could simply go with your second choice for the job. In deciding which way to go, there are a range of factors to consider.

One thing to think about is the expertise of your first choice. Was this person a true standout, an almost one of a kind, in a league of his or her own? If that’s the case, it might pay to reopen the job search in the hope of finding another outstanding candidate. But if the difference between number one and number two isn’t all that great, it might pay just to go with number two.

Another factor to consider is the applicant pool itself. If it is a small one, in a hard to find specialty, you probably have interviewed everyone of any consequence in the field to begin with, and so it would make little sense to reopen the job search.

You also need to consider how fast you need to fill the position. If the vacant position is a big drain on productivity and is really impacting your bottom line, you may want to go with your second choice, rather than going through a time consuming search again.

The hiring process itself may also influence your decision. When a job applicant turns down an offer, that should trigger a review of the hiring process to determine if something is wrong. Were there problems with the job description, was the resume review done properly, was the interview process effective in finding people who would be a good fit? If you discover that the rejection may have arisen from some problem in the interview process itself, you might want to make needed improvements and then try again.
