Tech Job Salary Report 2014

Posted May 13th, 2014

Tech salaries are going up! A recently released survey — sent to recruiters all across the country — projected that starting salaries for many IT positions will increase anywhere from 8.4% (pre-sales engineer/technical engineer) to 2.5% (mainframe programmer). The survey provided for more than 70 high-tech positions, broken down for 150 metro areas. Here is a list of the highest growth jobs:

  1. Pre-sales engineer / technical engineers…$82,750 to $116,750 (8.4% increase)
  2. Business Intelligence Analyst … $94,250 to $132,500 (7.4% increase)
  3. Data Architect….$111,750 to $153,750 (7.2% increase)
  4. Developer/Programmer Analyst …$69,250 to $122,750 (7.2% increase)
  5. Wireless Network Engineer…$91,500 to $125,250 (7.0% increase)

At the other end of the spectrum are the slowest growth jobs:

  1. Mainframe Systems Programmer … $59,000 to $82,000 (2.5% increase)
  2. Operations Manager … $64,250 to $89,250 (2.8% increase)
  3. Computer Operator … $33,750 to $46,500 (2.9% increase)
  4. Web Administrator … $63,500 to $95,750 (3.2% increase)
  5. Technical Writer… $53,000 to $83,500 (3.2% increase)

But even you do not currently work in (or aspire to be in) any of these positions, there are skills that you can acquire that will boost your salary – sometimes in double digit percentages. For example, if you have:

1) SharePoint skills, you can add 12% to your salary

2) .NET, PHP, Java, Java EE/J2EE or C# development skills, you can add 9% to your salary

3) SAP development skills, you can add 8% to your salary

4) C++ development skills, you can add 5% to your salary

5) Visual Basic skills, you can add 4% to your salary.

But it is not just development skills that can help boost your salary. If you have:

1) CMS (content management) skills, you can add 7% to your salary

2) Microsoft SQL database skills, you can add 10% to your salary

3) Oracle database skills, you can add 9% to your salary.

Money revolves around skills. The more skilled you are (or are perceived as being), the more creditability you have and the higher the salary you can obtain. So work to enhance your skillset every day. As you can tell, the extra work pays off.
