Is There a Perfect Job Candidate in Pleasanton?

Posted April 7th, 2014

During the hiring process, many companies cannot find anyone who fits the requirements for a job. They are looking for someone who has all of the qualifications outlined for the position and exactly the kind of knowledge and work experience they are looking for.

In other words, they are looking for the perfect candidate, one who fits the job description to a tee.

Unfortunately, such dream candidates almost never exist. And so job searches end up dragging on far longer than they should, and in a worst case scenario, the position just remains vacant.

When positions remain unfilled, hiring managers blame the quality of the applicants. But this is taking the easy way out, because quality is really not the issue, according to some human resource specialists. Quality candidates are out there. The real problem is that managers are first, setting their expectations too high, and second, not taking responsibility for hiring a qualified candidate and developing them into the kind of worker with exactly the skills that are needed.

Management Issues: Senior management acts as an enabler to managers by simply accepting their claims about the dearth of quality among applicants. As a result, they cutback on growth plans and productivity goals. What senior management should be doing, according to the human resource people, is holding managers accountable for filling jobs that are vacant and for retaining top employees.

Hiring Process: If the recruiting and hiring process at a company is not working, managers should be held responsible for finding out why and coming up with ways to fix the problem. If there is a problem, managers need to determine exactly what it is and then come up with a solution. A talent shortage may in fact exist, but all too often it becomes an excuse for less than adequate management.

Accountability: Managers need to be held accountable for finding candidates with the potential to do the job, and then also for developing and training them so that they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to actually do the job. Too often, candidates who have many of the qualifications needed – and the ability to do the job with training – are rejected because managers are not inclined to do the mentoring and developing that is needed.

The fact is, this signal failure during the hiring process has big repercussions throughout the company when it leads to failure to achieve strategic goals.
