Revive a Slowing Network Engineer Job Search

Posted April 23rd, 2014

The median amount of time people are out of work is 21.4 weeks. This stat can seem misleading because many people think that IT jobs are easy to get.

If you are looking for a job as network engineer, this might not be easiest job to land. It offers great pay, good benefits (with good companies) and the opportunity to work with great technology. However, the competition is fierce. The job market is slowing. So how can you boost your job search and land that great next job.

Step Back and Reevaluate

If you are looking for a network engineer job, ask yourself if you are doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. Are there some skills you are missing? Can you do some self-study and get a vendor certification like Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)? Are you applying for the right kinds of positions?

Simply submitting dozens of online applications won’t do if the particular job market is competitive. Identify companies you’d like to work for and go after them. Work to connect with people from those companies on social networking sites or (better yet) in person.

Build a Network

It’s difficult for people to get a feel for who you are when you are hidden behind a computer. This may be your comfort area, but if you want to land a job, you have to venture outside this zone. Clubs and professional associations can be huge assets in your job search. They also put you in a room with people who are interested in the same things you are and could potentially be hiring.

Get Back In Touch With Your Network

If it’s been a few months since you reached out to your online and offline network, it’s time to follow-up. Let them know about any updates to your professional development, new skillsets, or any seminars or classes you’ve attended.

Tighten Up Your Resume

Add new skills from any side projects or groups to your resume and online profiles. Study and make sure that your resume reflects the keywords that recruiters and employers search for.

Consider Contract Work

If you’ve have experience as a network engineer, you could contract out your skills while you’re searching for a full-time job. In fact, more people are becoming independent contractors by choice.
