IT Roles that will get you hired in 2014?
Posted March 13th, 2014
As a job seeker in 2014, you will not be able to simply focus on the individual technologies that you have mastered. It will not be enough to say that you can code in Java or that you can upgrade a server’s software. Value will be the name of the game in 2014. The technology you work in, the skills you have and the knowledge you carry will all have to produce tangible business value. In order to do that, you will have to master all three components…at the same time. Integration is not simply important across a group of technologies; it is important across the stable of skills that you will bring to the table.
For example, cloud administrators possess a variety of different skill sets around systems administration, virtualization, storage, and network administration. Data architects are able to mix their traditional programming and analytical backgrounds with knowledge of statistics, creative problem-solving skills and deep business knowledge.
Employers are looking for people who not only have skills, but competencies…people who can progress from being simply a Java developer to a software engineer. To succeed, you will need to bring much more to the table. According to CIO magazine, here are three top IT roles that employers will be looking for.
Enterprise Architects Who Get the Cloud
Being able to integrate cloud computing with on-premise systems (in a way that is sustainable and scalable) is the hot ticket right now. Companies do not need software code bolted onto their legacy systems, they need architected solutions. They need enterprise architects with a deep knowledge of both public and private cloud computing as well as an understanding of the relevant players and solutions. For example, they need to be able to work with developers, engineers, and analysts as well as executives, IT leaders and end-users to develop and execute a plausible cloud strategy.
Business Analysts with Integrated Thinking
Business analysts have evolved. They are not expected to be “integrated thinkers”, meaning they need to understand both the scope and responsibilities of the many functional departments found within an organization (i.e. purchasing, marketing, accounts payable) AND how new and evolving technologies can support and enhance that work.
Software Engineers Who Do More than Generate Code
Developers deliver a product, but software engineers deliver value. They understand how customers think; they are able to break apart and analyze workflows. They are not just programmers; they can put themselves in others’ shoes and dig deep down to understand the “hows”, “whats”, “whens” and “whys”. Because of this, they will be in demand in areas of ecommerce, website development, marketing and mobile computing.
