Whether you’ve been a manager for years or you’re just starting out in a new supervisory position, some things never change: the best tips for managing employees.

- Help your team members achieve their career goals. The key to getting your employees’ best work is to show them how that hard work aligns with their own career goals and how the goals you have for your department can align with theirs.
- Help your team members get along. Organize team getaways or retreats. Hold team lunches. Have short birthday parties for team members.
- There is no such thing as fair. One employee’s top efforts will be far lower than an outstanding team member’s average efforts, but the lower performing employee’s top efforts should still be acknowledged and celebrated. In other words, tailor your rewards system to the individuals within your team, not your team to your rewards system.
- Help your employees work to their strengths. If you’re a bank manager and one team member is great at reconciling the books – and enjoys it – don’t worry so much about making sure she’s great with customers. Yes, cross train her in customer service issues, but play to her strengths, not her weaknesses.
- Phrases such as “great job!” and “thank you for your hard work” really do go a long way.
- Provide regular feedback, both positive and constructive. Let people know how their performance is shaping up regularly. Don’t let your assessment of an employee’s performance at the annual review come as a surprise to the employee.
- Don’t wait for people to come to you, go to them. Take employees to lunch one-on-one. Get out on the floor and ask questions. Don’t rely on the proverbial “open door” policy and decide that because no one’s taking advantage of it, no one has any issues. Get out there and listen!
