Preparing a Powerful Presentation
Posted September 2nd, 2013
If you are applying for a job, or already have one, one of the things you may have to do is give a presentation. You may have your own system worked out in preparing for it, ideas you have picked up from experience. Or this may be a first-time experience, and you’re not quite sure what to do. Either way, experts on the matter have some advice on how to prepare.
The first recommendation is something you probably are aware of already – know your subject as well as you possibly can. This will not only make your presentation more interesting and informative, it will also add to your confidence in delivering it. You will be more relaxed and sure of yourself, which will add to your performance.
You should also make notes. An outline is usually a good way to organize your material. You don’t want to write out the entire talk, because then you would end up just reading it, and nothing is duller than that. But having a brief outline in front of you will help keep you on track. You should make sure your notes are well organized, having an introduction, a body and a conclusion. This will make it easier to follow for the audience. And it must be easy to follow, since your audience will only have your words to listen to.
Also, if you decide to use PowerPoint, you need to be careful how you incorporate it into your presentation. It should only be used in support of your presentation; it shouldn’t be the main part of it. The information on the slides should be short, only about three to five lines. And you don’t need to read what is on the slides. Your audience can do that.
You should also rehearse. It will make your delivery smoother and more polished. Practicing before a mirror is a good way to rehearse.
You should also try to make a connection with your audience. Doing a little research beforehand on who will be in your audience will help here. You can add details in your presentation that will pertain particularly to the people you are talking to.
