Why a Temp Job Can Be a Great Starting Point to a Great Career

Posted July 15th, 2013

Read below for seven reasons working as a temporary can be a great step in the right direction for your career.

  1. Employers are still cautious about hiring full time. Many will hire people in a temporary or temp-to-hire situation to see a) if they still have enough work for the individual in six months’ time and/or b) if the person in the position is a good fit for it.
  2. Staffing services are doing boffo business right now. They’re the companies who are hiring! CareerBuilder.com recently performed its annual hiring survey and found that 40 percent of employers planned to bring on temporary associates this year. This is up from 36 percent in 2012.
  3. Temporary positions are “real” jobs. Employers want people who have few – if any – gaps of more than a handful of months on a resume or job application. They’ll see your temporary work as proof that you have a great work ethic and are willing to “do what it takes” to stay employed.
  4. Temporary positions also will help you learn new skills. Let’s face it: we do tend to get lazy when we’re in a position for a while. We get complacent and moan when our boss suggests we learn a new skill. What’s more, some employers don’t offer the chance to learn new skills! Working in temporary assignments will expose you to new skills automatically. In addition, your staffing service often provides skills training in software free of charge to its employees. Take advantage of this.
  5. Temporary work grows your network. You’ll be connecting with new people professionally and forging relationships with your new colleagues. These colleagues know people who can help you find work. They also can serve as future job references.
  6. Temporary positions often lead to you becoming an employee of the company where you’re on assignment. It happens more often than you think! That CareerBuilder.com employer survey mentioned above found that 42 percent of the companies who responded said they planned to transition temporary workers to the company’s payroll this year.
  7. Can you say: “Paycheck!”? Temporary assignments can help augment your family’s income as you look for more permanent work.
