10 Easy Tips for “Going Green” at Work

Posted November 9th, 2012

A survey of 100 organizations by the Corporate Greening Initiative revealed that only 23% of respondents had a corporate green policy that was actually well-implemented and enforced. 18% had a policy, but admitted that it was not well conceived or adhered to, while another 47% did not have a policy at all, though they intend to create one soon. If you’re part of the 65% who either don’t have a policy yet or whose current policy isn’t working well, here are 10 quick and easy tips for going green in the workplace.

1) Kill the Energy Vampires – Even if they’re not being used, devices that are plugged in slowly siphon energy. Take full advantage of your computers’ sleep mode, and unplug devices when they are not in use – or use power strips that can easily be turned on and off.

2) Go Eco With Replacements – You don’t have to “go green” all at once. Take baby steps instead, swapping out regular paper for recycled, etc., when it’s time to re-order or replace things.

3) Think About Ink – Try relying on virtual documents to reduce the amount of printing you do, and use e-faxing instead of paper faxes. Try refilling ink cartridges, or at least recycle the ones you dispose of, and purchase eco-friendly ink.

4) Buy in Bulk – Not only will you save money with bulk pricing, but fewer shipments also mean reduced fuel usage and less packaging.

5) Adjust the Thermostat Going up or down even one degree can help without significantly altering comfort levels. Make sure your thermostat is programmable – and accurately set.

6) Dispose of the Disposables Instead of paper or plastic cups at the coffee machine or water cooler, order company logo mugs. Be sure to have a few extras on hand for guests.

7) Print on the Double – You can cut your paper usage in half instantly by using the double-sided printing function on your printers and copy machines.

8) Head to the Cloud – Cloud computing is green on two fronts: fewer data storage devices are created, and less power is used to operate them.

9) Go Virtual – Video conferencing instead of meetings saves fuel and reduces pollution. Telecommuting offers similar environmental benefits.

10) Reuse and Recycle – If still-usable items can’t be repurposed within your organization, donate them. Also be sure to properly recycle not only the typical paper/glass/bottles/cans, but electronic items that contain potentially dangerous components.

The great thing about corporate greening is that when all those savings start to add up, it can be as good for your bottom line as it is for the environment.
