Encouraging Innovation in Healthcare Application and Services

Posted July 20th, 2012

The U.S Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the West Wireless Health Institute, a nonprofit medical research organization out of San Diego, to utilize massive amounts of new health data and help entrepreneurs understand that data.

This initiative or “Innovator in Residence” has HHS seeking open access to government-kept health data and encourages innovators in the field to come up with new health services and applications. In this effort to encourage more creativity in the industry, HHS is calling to www.health.data.gov to make its website more open.

Big business has taken advantage of all kinds of other government agencies and has capitalized on vital government information. That same kind of initiative just isn’t there with government health data. It is widely unknown what kind of business models could come from this kind of information.

“The Internet has democratized the distribution of information, but not in healthcare,” says Mohit Kaushal, executive vice president of business development and chief strategy officer of “Innovator in Residence.”

HHS and West Wireless has decidedly partnered with Pierce Graham-Jones, a health IT expert who previously worked on an initiative through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. As lead strategist for the Beacon Health Community, he found valuable IT investments that would advance patient care.

Graham-Jones is set to begin his residency program in Washington and plans to travel extensively to connect and cultivate standing relationships with other entrepreneurs, nationwide.

“By hosting our innovator in residence, HHS is creating an active interface between the government and the entrepreneurial community to help explore what additional data can be made available to improve healthcare,” says Kaushal.

“If this program is successful in accelerating the pace of innovative applications of HHS data, it will likely be continued and expanded.”
