Wince-Free Networking Via Social Media
Posted February 8th, 2011
While it’s highly unlikely that you remember walking for the first time, you do know that the eventual outcome was a positive one. Remember that if you if you’re just beginning to test the waters of social networking on the Internet.
Like a wobbly toddler embarking on a new adventure, learning about Internet networking is going to be a new and — we hope — exciting experience for you
.
Like a toy store with aisles of enticing wares vying for one’s attention, today’s social networking choices are many and varied. Some of the more popular ones include MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Digg, and StumbleUpon just to name a few.
And their fans are legion. Only a few years ago there were 25 networking sites each with more than 4 million members. One site catering to classmates boasted more than 40 million members.
Generally speaking social networking is nothing more than sharing thoughts, ideas, life experiences, photographs, and related interests with others. Often the recipients of this electronic chatter are our friends, while sometimes they are strangers who may become friends. Given the widespread popularity of the Internet there are literally millions of people out there sharing tidbits of their lives with other cyber-acquaintances.
And that is where the first-time and even veteran, social networking participants need to do their homework. Not every site is designed to deliver the same exact information. Find out as much as you can about a site first.
One simple and convenient way to learn about a particular site is to have a friend who uses that site to show you the ABCs of the site. There is even a book for those “dummies” out there wanting to learn how to navigate FaceBook, as well as Twitter, LinkedIn, and many of the other social media sites.
Some experts suggest identifying what it is you want to accomplish before deciding which site to join. LinkedIn, for example, can be a terrific tool to use in a job search.
