How to Make Yourself Indispensable
Posted October 19th, 2010
When it comes to employment, particularly in a tough job market, it is important to do the best job possible. Not only will this bring you financial gain, but it also will ensure some job security. After all, star employees often are the last to be let go when layoffs are necessary.
Making yourself indispensable at work requires more than just excelling at job duties and meeting certain company goals or performance measures. It is also about attitude and how you interact with other people in your office. Moreover, it is about your ability to ingratiate yourself in your corporate environment, soaking up knowledge that makes you the go-to person at your job.
To start, excel at the tasks which you were hired to perform. This might be as simple as brushing up your skills and making sure that you appear to be as efficient and organized in your job as possible. When a project is due, turn it in early. If the boss needs something, make it a priority. In everything you do, do it with a professional attitude and a smile on your face.
Next, learn a few other positions in your office. For example, if you are a process development technician, it wouldn’t hurt to learn some purification and fermentation process development skills as well. This allows you to be able to cover for another person should they need to be out of the office for any length of time. This is key to becoming indispensable to your department because you are capable of doing your job, and that of other people as well.
Make sure you have a professional attitude at all times and never bring your personal business to the office. After all, if you are trying to be the model employee, you must strive to play the part. Offer to help other employees in times of turmoil or hardship and try to be front and center with solutions to any problems that may arise in the office.
The key to being indispensable is to make it so your department would be much worse off without you. By showcasing your vast range of skills, learning the jobs of other employees and maintaining a sense of calm and professionalism, you go a long way to ensuring your place in your company for a long time to come.
